What is Christianity?

Usually, when you come to my blog you can expect to find an encouraging, and hopefully edifying, devotional that challenges you to move deeper in your spiritual walk and draw closer to God. But today I want to do something just a little bit different and, instead of me writing to you, I want your input on a very important question: What is Christianity?

The majority of us already know what we believe and how to defend it, what it means to be saved, and can explain to an unbeliever how they too can experience God’s grace. But for some reason the above question, as simple as it may be, can be a very tricky one to answer. That’s why I want your opinions!

Anyway, if you’re reading this post, please leave me a comment less than 100 words in length and explain your definition of Christianity (or reply to me by email if you’re reading this from your inbox). I too will be meditating on this question over the next day or so, and will use your comments as a resource for a post I’m planning on this topic.

Again, please don’t click away from this page without commenting! Your post could be just what it takes to spark an enlightening discussion.

Hmmm... does it really have to be less than 100 words? ;-)

I think it's a great question, and I might want to think about it more. But for now, here's my answer:

Christianity is the belief that Christ (The one and only son of God who is Himself God) died as the propitiation for sinful humanity in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (large portions of this taken for my definition, as you will see!)

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures

Good question. I think Christianity is a small term that defines a big thing. It's a word we use when we talk about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and those who believe in Him and love Him. It also has a lot more meaning behind it, but this is the quickie :P I've gotta run, but I'll check back later!

Well, I guess I know what Christianity is NOT, so it's easy to look at what it IS. I think an outsider & a believer should know your a Christian from the moment they look at you, talk to you, & get to know you. That should be a reflection of your heart for Christ & your devotion to Him. I think Christianity is like what Squeaks said, a word we use to to refer those who believe that Christ died & rose again. Christianity simply means we are followers of Christ.

Of course, I am greatly challenged with all these questions & ponderings. Am I REALLY a Christian by what I just described?

One word exemplifies Christianity.... Jesus. Without Him, Christianity is nothing.

Christianity also known as The Way an early term for Christianity. Which I think is meaning the way of the cross. So Christianity would mean following the way of the cross. How would you explain this to a non Christian? Love would be the term that would best describe Christ or the cross because of, 1 John 3:16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.

So I would say love is the word to describe Christianity to a non Chritian.

God Bless,
